Where the extra money goes

Two ways to put money toward cleaning beyond your own block, and the answers to what people usually ask about them.

How this works

Neighbors on a block each pledge what they can per month. Once those pledges cover what the block costs, weekly cleaning starts, done by a cleaner hired from the neighborhood. A typical block costs about $200 a month.

Your pledge is a ceiling, not a bill. That $200 is split across everyone signed up, so the more neighbors join, the less each household actually pays.

Say you pledged $30 and your block filled up enough that your share costs $20.

That gap is normally just not collected. The Neighborhood Fund is what you turn on if you would rather pay your full pledge and send the gap to a block near you that has not reached its number yet.

Some parts of the city will not get there on neighbor pledges alone. The Impact Fund is for that. It takes contributions from anyone, member or not, and puts them toward cleaning in those places.

The two funds

One uses money already inside the system. The other brings in money from outside it.

Questions

  • Yes, and this is the part worth understanding. Normally your bill drops below your pledge as more neighbors join. With it on, you keep paying your full pledge and the gap goes to a nearby block. You are never charged more than you pledged.

  • No. Glitter is a Pennsylvania benefit corporation, not a registered charity. If that changes we will say so here.

  • Any time. The Neighborhood Fund is a toggle in your profile, off by default. Impact Fund contributions can be stopped the same way you set them up.

  • Not on your own yet. Right now we report on it when we email members. A view of this on your block page is something we want to build

  • A block close to yours with neighbors signed up that has not reached the amount it needs to start getting cleaned.
